Hamburg, 12 September 2016 – 2016 was a record year for the Hamburg cruise market: Cruise Gate Hamburg (CGH) recorded 170 cruise ship visits (2015: 153 calls) and more than 700,000 passengers (2015: 520,000 passengers). Since the beginning of this year CGH has been operating all three of Hamburg’s cruise centres (Altona, HafenCity and Steinwerder).
“Since the inauguration of the Cruise Center Steinwerder in June last year we have perfected our service to very large cruise ships in Hamburg and demonstrated that we are excellently placed both in terms of technical equipment and capacities,” Sacha Rougier, Managing Director of CGH, says. So far, the Cruise Center Steinwerder has seen 90 cruise ship visits and the turnaround of more than 530,000 passengers. “We are currently working on further improving the accessibility of the Cruise Center Steinwerder by public transport.” Since May 2016 CGH has been providing free-of-charge shuttle bus services from the Veddel S-Bahn station to the Cruise Center Steinwerder.
The latest figures show that Hamburg is on its way towards becoming one of Europe’s top cruise destinations. “We will continue our efforts to make Hamburg as a cruise port more attractive to cruise lines and passengers by investing in modern infrastructure facilities and supplying alternative energy to cruise ships“says Jens Meier, Chairman of the Management Board of the HPA.
For 2017 CGH expects the success story to continue. “Our current plans provide for a double-digit percentage growth in passenger numbers,” Rougier states. In addition, CGH will have more berth assignment options after the widening of the Entrance to the Vorhafen Harbour Basin has been completed. Simulations have shown that after the widening, ships with a maximum beam of 40 metres will be able to berth at Altona Terminal.
Cruise highlights for 2017 include maiden calls by the Norwegian Jade, the Norwegian Joy, the Mein Schiff 6, the Independence OTS, the MSC Preziosa and the Silver Wind.
