Sarah Niemeyer is a Chief Terminal Officer at Cruise Gate Hamburg, ensuring that everything runs smoothly during a cruise ship call at the terminal. From guiding vessels into position and coordinating gangway operations to managing a wide range of service providers, no two days are alike. In the latest episode of the Hamburg Port Authority’s video series “A Day at the Port”, Sarah offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at her varied day-to-day work and the diverse responsibilities of a Chief Terminal Officer.
From the early morning preparations before a cruise ship arrives to the handover to the next shift, the video highlights the many people, processes and coordinated efforts required to ensure a seamless cruise operation.
The episode was filmed at Cruise Center Steinwerder during a call of AIDAnova, the largest cruise ship conducting passenger turnarounds in Hamburg. On a typical turnaround day, more than 12,000 people pass through the terminal. At the same time, extensive logistical operations take place alongside the ship, including provisioning, fresh water supply, baggage handling, waste disposal and shore power connection.
