Cruise Terminals Hamburg : Pioneers in environmental protection

The new shore power station at the Altona cruise terminal as well as the LNG power barge in HafenCity create the conditions to substantially reduce the emission of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and particulate matter as well as carbon dioxide. Significant reductions in noise levels will also be achieved. The new shore power station will benefit residents, crews and passengers alike. At Hamburg’s third cruise terminal in Steinwerder a LNG facility to supply power at the berths is currently being installed to reduce emissions from ships while they are docking.

The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) already rewards ships for environmental performance by granting discounts on port fees (environmental ship index discount or port power discount) if they use shore power from renewable sources. Such discounts are incentives for shipping companies to invest in green technologies.

On top, all ships calling at the Port of Hamburg must use fuels with a sulphur content of less than 0.1%. This restriction also applies in the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
The air quality in Hamburg is continually monitored and measured. The results do not support the theory that cruise ships cause the air quality to deteriorate.
Cruise ships accounted for just 2.4% of total nitrogen oxide emissions from seagoing vessels in the Port of Hamburg in 2013.
